My AIChE

Safety & Chemical Engineering Education (SACHE) for Companies

Take the SACHE SURVEY now!!  The purpose of this survey is to determine how the undergraduate chemical engineering curriculum is preparing graduates to handle safety in industry.  We are focusing on chemical engineers who have one to two years of industrial experience. Download the survey here. Please complete and email to ccps@aiche.org or fax to 646-495-1372.

Access to the CCPS Process Safety Beacon Archives is now available to all 2007 SACHE members.  Members can search and download among of 60 past issues. (NEW)!  If you are not a member of SACHE, you will have view-only privileges. To become a member of SACHE, please call Roxy Schneider at 646-495-1372..

Download a SACHE application form here.

SACHE is an effort between CCPS and universities to provide teaching materials and programs that incorporate elements of process safety with the education of undergraduate students and young practicing engineers. For information on SACHE products and benefits, go to www.SACHE.org.

This AIChE effort was initiated after Bhopal, with an objective to help engineers and companies prevent similar accidents in the future.  AIChE and CCPS recognized that the most effective way to improve safety in our plants and laboratories is through more and a better process safety education.

Although the SACHE products are developed primarily for undergraduate programs, it is clearly recognized that these SACHE products can and should be used within companies, especially for young engineers.

SACHE Products: SACHE eduacational material focuses on fundamental technical subjects that should be integrated into the basic education of engineers. The proposed topics include calculating the size of relief valves, computing sources from ruptured vessels or pipelines, calculating downwind compositions of chemicals, understanding the flammable and explosive characteristics of chemicals and dusts, risk analysis, technical safety reviews, inherent safety, hazards of chemical reactivity, etc.

Company Trainers: The SACHE committee and CCPS select the teaching materials to developed. University professors together with industrial experts generally author the products. The products include PowerPoint slide/lecture sets, DVD movies, problem sets with solutions, and case histories. Each year, members can acquire access to a new package of educational materials with a value significantly greater than the annual membership fee. New members can also acquire access to any of the previous years’ products by paying the additional membership fee for that specific year or years. Company trainers may download produces and use them as is or may modify them to fit teaching style.

Note:  A company member can download the specific year’s products as often as desired, and the company’s plants can download the products internationally.

Membership:  CCPS encourages all companies and schools to become members of SACHE and to use the SACHE products in training sessions or classrooms. Click here for membership form.
