The Model AHT-200 absolute humidity transmitter uses thermal conductivity sensors to measure moisture content at elevated temperatures up to 200°C. It is said to outperform conventional capacitive/resistance humidity sensors in harsh environments, and it can recover from exposure to deposits and condensation. Its range is 0–130 g/m3 with an accuracy of ±3 g/m3, which corresponds to ±2.3% RH at 35 g/m3 at 60°C.

CoolPoint Vortex-Shedding Flowmeter
The CoolPoint vortex-shedding flowmeter for measuring and monitoring water flows in chemical processing applications now includes a totalizing capability and a scaled pulse output as a standard selectable option, which increases the meter’s abiliity to monitor and control the total amount of water used in a process. Accuracy has been improved to ±2% of actual flow, and repeatability remains at ±1% of actual flow.

P420 series vortex-shedding flowmeters
P420 series vortex-shedding flowmeters are inexpensive, nonmechanical flowrate transmitters with no moving parts that can stick, bind or become coated when processing corrosive fluids. They meet the requirements of the chemical, water treatment and water desalination industries, and are suitable for corrosives, water, brine and low-viscosity-fluid applications. The instruments feature wetted parts constructed entirely of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Since these flowmeters have no O-ring seals, they make connections either by solvent-welding PVC pipe into the socket port or through a threaded connection. Electronic output is from a 4–20-mA two-wire transmitter, and the electronics package is encapsulated with a thermosetting compound to make it resistant to shorting, corrosion, leaks, humidity, or condensate formed in conduits or from thermal cycling. They are available in five pipe sizes with maximum flowrates as follows: 0.5 in. (12 gal/min, 45 L/min); 0.75 in. (25 gal/min, 95 L/min); 1.0 in. (50 gal/min, 190 L/min); 1.5 in. (100 gal/min, 380 L/min); and 2.0 in. (200 gal/min, 750 L/min).

Complementing a line of integrated wireless field units, these analog, digital and analog/digital output modules enable processors to remotely monitor equipment and process conditions with no field wiring. They allow the integration of wireless monitoring instrumentation into existing control systems for a variety of applications. The analog modules provide four 4–20-mA analog outputs, the digital modules provide eight switch-closure outputs that report the conditions of the input switches and the status of the field units, and the analog/digital modules combine the capabilities of both. Typical installed costs are said to be 90% less than those of conventional wired devices.

Designed for measuring dry bulk solids, regardless of the presence of surrounding vapor or moderate dust, the EasyTrak XP laser transmitter is housed in an explosionproof assembly with screw-on cover for quick and easy access. The dual-compartment design allows users to isolate the wiring and terminations from the sensing elements and internal electronics. Meeting the requirements for use in hazardous areas (FM and CSA — Class I, Division 1 and 2, Groups A, B, C, D), the EasyTrak XP’s rugged, powdercoated aluminum enclosure is rated for IP67 or NEMA 4X and DIP ratings. The device can measure virtually any solid surface at any angle, whether grains, plastics, or aggregates. The small wavelength of the laser means a narrower beam with virtually no beam divergence and, therefore, no false echoes. New features of the Allen-Bradley SLC 500-Series controllers include improved messaging over Common Industrial Protocol (CIP)-based networks and enhanced security capabilities. Instruction updates allow generic CIP commands to be initiated in devices, such as drives, that communicate on Ethernet/IP, ControlNet and DeviceNet networks, simplifying the programming, configuring, monitoring and troubleshooting of explicit messages. A new firmware release includes a secured processor capability through Rockwell Software RSAssetSecurity, which enables the RSLogix 500 programming software to configure a processor so that it will be more secure against unauthorized access. A new Read Program Checksum (RPC) instruction can help determine whether online edits have changed the program or verify that the program in the memory module matches that in the processor’s RAM. And, a dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) provides flexible IP address assignment for the SLC 5/05 processor Channel One Ethernet port.

The Bundle Waveguide Technology (BWT) system with the DigitalFlow DF868 flowmeter measures LNG flowrates in pipes ranging from 2 in. to 48 in., and is touted as the only solution for measuring LNG flows in pipes greater than 8 in. The system measures cryogenic flows of LNG at –161°C (–322°F) as it is transferred from liquefaction trains and tankers into storage tanks at production plants and receiving terminals. The Sentinel is a naturalgas ultrasonic flowmeter specifically designed to meet the demands of high accuracy, fiscal custody-transfer measurement. It is used for metering natural gas fed to production liquefaction trains and re-gasified LNG at receiving terminals, or for any natural gas measurement where high accuracy is needed. It is a multipath ultrasonic flowmeter available in pipe sizes ranging from 6 in. to 48 in., and meets AGA 9 criteria. OxyTrak is an innovative sealed reference analyzer that uses a unique, miniaturized zirconium-oxide sensor with a sealed internal reference to accurately determine flue gas oxygen content, even with rapidly changing process conditions. With the sensor acting in “pump” mode, the current needed to maintain partial pressure equilibrium is proportional to the oxygen content. In addition, the Nernst voltage present during transients is used to instantly indicate the magnitude of oxygen content changes. The small sensor size allows the measurement inputs to reach equilibrium quickly, providing superior speed of response. The unit is designed for in situ installations with variable probe lengths up to 60 in. The advanced microprocessor-based electronics package features an infrared, through-the-glass keypad; a universal power supply (85 to 264 VAC); 0/4 to 20 mA or 0 to 2 VDC analog output; dual alarms; a fail-safe alarm; and an RS232 or RS485 serial output.

When installed, the V2 System flowmeter requires less straight-run piping than conventional flowmeters. Suitable for a wide range of industrial process and wastewater applications, the system accommodates line sizes from 4 in. to 18 in., wherever irregular or crowded piping and equipment conditions make other flow technologies impractical or unworkable. The flowmeter measures over a wide flow range from 40 to 7,500 gal/min.

Capable of handling demanding water flow measurements, the Marsh Single-Mag flowmeter requires little maintenance and is easy to install and use. Equipped with a unique electromagnetic technology, the device serves in pressurized line applications from 2 in. to 96 in. It has a flow accuracy of ±2% of reading and operates over a wide flow range, from –5 to 20 ft/s. The Single-Mag provides a reliable 4–20-mA analog output signal for monitoring and alarming. The V-Cone Chem Processing flowmeter supports a wide range of both chemical production process line and general plant applications, including measuring water, other mixed liquids or specialty gas flows within process lines, as well as plant systems for water/wastewater, chilled water, steam, natural gas and HVAC. It features an advanced differential-pressure flow sensor designed with built-in flow conditioning to achieve an accuracy of ±0.5%, with a repeatability of ±0.1. The Wafer-Cone flowmeter features a modular design that allows users to replace the flow element in order to adapt the device to changing flow conditions in dynamic processes. It uses differential pressure technology with built-in flow conditioning to achieve an accuracy of ±0.5% and a repeatability of ±0.1%. The pressure difference between the static line pressure and the low pressure downstream at the cone is measured via two pressure-sensing taps, and is then used with a derivation of the Bernoulli equation to calculate the fluid flowrate. The flowmeter is designed for liquid or gas service and is available in line sizes from 0.5 in. to 6.0 in., which makes it suitable for use in natural gas wells and in small process lines. A self-conditioning-flow feature eliminates the need for the extensive upstream/downstream straight pipe runs that are required by similar technologies, such as orifice plates and venturi tubes. The meter can be installed independently anywhere in a piping system.

Based on a technology developed at Sandia National Laboratory, the H2Scan system is a solid-state solution that detects concentrations of hydrogen gas, at concentrations from 10 ppm to 100%, with or without oxygen present. Available in a portable model, the sensor contains a thin film of a palladium-nickel (Pd/Ni) resistor deposited on a silicon substrate that changes resistance in the presence of hydrogen. The lattice inherent in the Pd/Ni absorbs hydrogen molecules. As the number of hydrogen molecules in the lattice increases, the resistance of the Pd/Ni increases in direct correlation. H2scan systems interpret this change in resistance and display the hydrogen concentration to the operator, while also generating an analog signal that can be sent to external monitoring systems. The instrument is 13.6 in. long, 2.9 in. wide, 1.7 in. deep and weighs 1.7 lb.

The WLSX level transmitter allows continuous non-contact ultrasonic level measurement in liquid storage tanks up to 35 ft (10.7 m). The Model 5100-NCM offers a highly reliable and cost-effective method for quickly and accurately measuring moisture in natural gas. The device has a detection limit of 5 ppmv and an operating range from 5 to 2,500 ppmv. It is accurate to less than 2% of reading or ±4 ppmv, whichever is greater. The laser-based analyzer features compact, fully enclosed optics and sample conditioning, on-board moisture verification, and all digital processing. The rugged, compact unit is available in an IP65 and NEMA 4 enclosure with both Modbus and Ethernet analog and digital connectivity.

The Western Research Model IPS-4, developed for UV-VIS spectroscopy of liquids and gases, can measure up to eight wavelengths and quantify five measurement components simultaneously. An Update Wizard keeps all new or revised pdf-formatted bulletins, instruction manuals, fliers, brochures, and schematics up to date with the latest information. The CD also includes monitor sizing to allow users to size an application, a conversion calculator to convert common units of measurement to and from standard and metric units, and a regulator-selection wizard to assist users with choosing the correct regulator for a particular application.

X-STREAM analyzers
X-STREAM analyzers offer single- and dual-channel analysis using infrared, ultraviolet and visible (NDIR/UV/VIS) detectors, with paramagnetic and electrochemical oxygen senors, and thermal conductivity sensors. Three configurations are available: a rack-mounted or tabletop general-purpose model; a flameproof/explosionproof model (pictured) in a wall-mountable NEMA 4X/IP66 painted cast aluminum housing suitable for Class I, Zone 1, Group IIB + H2 hazardous areas; and a field-housing model in a NEMA 4X/IP66 painted stainless steel housing. The analyzers can measure one or two components in any combination. Optional thermostatic control enables the measurement of lower sample gas concentrations and higher dew points. A purge can be added to protect the electronics and provide operator safety when handling corrosive and toxic gases.

SCU multi-controller
Compatible with existing HART-compliant 2-wire or 4-wire units, the SCU multi-controller enables operators to view data from, and program, up to 15 ultrasonic level transmitters (ULTs) from a central control room. The SCU has an integrated LCD panel that accommodates a wide variety of display functions, including tank content visualization using echo analysis of the ULT. Output options include 4–20 mA and relays that are programmed via a six-button keypad in an IP65 enclosure.

The Rosemount 5400 is touted as the first radar transmitter to offer peak performance in all three areas vital to radar level measurement: Echosensitivity — the ability to detect weak radar echoes reliably; Echodynamics — the ability to handle weak and strong radar echoes simultaneously; and Echologics — the ability to ignore false echoes. Two models are available — the Rosemount 5401, low-frequency transmitter (~ 6 GHz), which is used in applications with turbulence, heavy vapors, foam or where there is a risk for deposits on the antenna and the Rosemount 5402, high-frequency transmitter (~ 26 GHz), which utilizes a narrower radar beam for installations that have tall or narrow nozzles, where the nozzle is close to the tank wall, or to avoid disturbing objects in the tank.

The Micro Motion F-Series compact Coriolis meters are now rated to 5,000 psi, offering customers flow and density measurement in demanding, high-pressure environments at flowrates up to 300 lb/min. When combined with Micro Motion MVD Technology, the F-Series meters deliver mass flow accuracy up to ±0.1% and volume flow accuracy up to ±0.15% when measuring liquids. On liquid density, the meters are accurate up to ±0.001 g/cm3.

375 Field Communicator
The 375 Field Communicator now supports 82 additional FOUNDATION fieldbus devices and 50 more HART instruments. The device is already compatible with more than 800 HART and fieldbus instruments from a variety of manufacturers. Replacing the 275 HART Communicator, this convenient portable tool is used to increase maintenance productivity and effectiveness by supplementing networked stations that access advanced online diagnostics. The 375 intrinsically safe, ATEX-compliant portable communicator rugged and reliable, meeting the demands of production environments. It is integrated with Emerson’s AMS Suite: Intelligent Device Manager, an online asset-management application that accesses diagnostic information generated by smart field devices. Instrument data collected in the field using the 375 can be uploaded to the permanent database of the AMS Device Manager. As new field devices become available, their descriptions, which are used to establish communications, can be downloaded from the Internet to the 375.

Models F025, F050 and F100 high-temperature flowmeters
Rounding out the Micro Motion F-Series family of high-temperature flowmeters are the Models F025, F050 and F100. They are available in Type 316L stainless steel in sizes from 1/4 in. to 4 in., or in Hastelloy C-22 up to 3 in. All are rated to 350_C. The flowmeters’ electronics are attached at the end of a flexible conduit, away from the heat of the sensor, so the user can choose any transmitter option for integral mounting.

Featuring native communications capability for integration of wireless field networks, the ROC800-Series Remote Operations Controller enables oil-and-gas operators to improve asset predictability, manage remote assets more profitably, improve maintenance efficiency, and deliver cost reductions in asset construction time. Secure and robust, these units communicate with instrumentation at wellheads, pipelines, and other remote sites. Micro Motion Elite Coriolis meters are now offered with a nickel-alloy C-22 construction option and a high-pressure option. Model CMF400 is suitable for 4-in. to 6-in. line sizes with a maximum flowrate to 20,000 lb/m. The high-pressure CMF400P version is now pressure-rated to 2,973 psi, making it suitable for ethylene, natural gas, refining and petrochemical applications where accurate and reliable measurements, taken under high-pressure conditions, are critical. The new nickel-alloy C-22 construction of the CMF400H version makes it suitable for applications where the process fluid is harsh and incompatible with stainless steel, such as sour crude handling, well-product and some corrosive refining applications. These devices deliver ±0.05% mass and volume flow accuracy over a 20:1 turndown, and up to ±0.0002 g/cc density accuracy.

Model 1056-HT (HART) and Model 1056-DP (Profibus) analyzers
Two new dual-input versions of the Rosemount Model 1056 analyzer, the Model 1056-HT (HART) and Model 1056-DP (Profibus), make increased use of centralized monitoring and control, sensor diagnostics, and other advanced digital capabilities. The HART-enabled analyzer allows remote calibration, continuous monitoring of four live process variables, and configuration from the manufacturer’s AMS Suite or DeltaV host applications, a legacy DCS, or a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system. Included diagnostics tools allow plants to estimate the life of in-process sensors and perform required maintenance on a timely basis. This multi-parameter instrument allows any combination of single or dual inputs of pH/ORP/ISE (pH, oxidation-reduction potential, ion-selective electrode), resistivity/conductivity, percent concentration, chlorine, oxygen, ozone, temperature, turbidity, pulse flow, and 4–20-mA current input. 

X-STREAM process gas analyzers
X-STREAM process gas analyzers now incorporate the manufacturer’s IntrinzX intrinsically linear photometric technology to provide high-sensitivity, large dynamic ranges, and long-term span stability. IntrinzX uses split-cell dual-beam photometry and constant comparison of the reference signal and the measurement signal to achieve an intrinsically linear response to changes in concentration. This enables sensitivity as low as 0–10 ppm, span drift of less than 0.5% per week, and dynamic ranges as large as 0–200 to 0–50,000 ppm. The analyzers feature extended ambient temperature ranges for all geographic areas, and an alphanumeric display with clear text messages available in multiple languages. They use Rosemount Analytical infrared, ultraviolet and visible photometry, paramagnetic and electrochemical oxygen and thermal conductivity sensor technologies. These gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) standards for natural and synthetic polymer applications provide pre-weighed, accurate portions, and are traceable to standards provided by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Triple Detection Standards (TDS) consist of six sets of two standards each, one narrow and one broad. They calibrate detectors that are used in triple detection, such as light-scattering, viscometers, and refractometers. Universal Calibration Standards (UCS) consist of six sets of twelve individual narrow standards, each designed to be used for column calibrations, either conventional molecular weight (MW) calibration with a concentration detector, or universal calibration with a viscometer detector. The narrow standard is helpful in determining detector volume offsets and peak broadening errors; it is particularly useful for checking molecular weight density (MWD) and other molecular values. Optiswitch 3000
The Optiswitch 3000, for the level detection of bulk solids, and the 5000, for the level detection of liquids, are virtually unaffected by the chemical and physical properties of their respective application media, including density, conductivity, viscosity and dielectric constant. Key to the Optiswitch’s robust operation is a tuning fork that is energized piezoelectrically and vibrates at the mechanical resonance frequency. Because the piezo is fixed mechanically, it is not subject to temperature shock limitations. When the tuning fork is immersed in a liquid or solid, the vibrating frequency changes, is detected by the integrated oscillator, and is converted into a switching command. Both the 3000 and 5000 are available in standard- and extended-tube versions, and the 3000 is also offered in a cable version.

ALTOSONIC III
The first three-beam, custody-transfer ultrasonic flowmeter, the ALTOSONIC III is intended to replace turbines and positivedisplacement (PD) flowmeters in the fiscal measurement of light liquid hydrocarbons. For custody transfer, the meter offers 0.2% accuracy and is compliant with OIML R-117. With no moving parts, the ALTOSONIC III eliminates problems with clogging, scaling or blockage. And with no pressure loss, the need to upsize pumps (with the corresponding costs for procurement and electricity) is avoided. The newly released second-generation QUANTIM Coriolis mass flowmeter/controller is now approved for use in Class 1 Div. 2 installations as a UL-recognized component. A modular hardware platform using improved sensing tube geometries and optical sensing techniques now enables QUANTIM to handle both liquids and gases. This complete NIST-traceable calibration package is comprised of nonintrusive calibration accessories that have been designed for the manufacturer’s inline UV sensors AF45 and AF46. Similar to features afforded to spectro_photometer calibrations, these filters test: photometric accuracy and linearity, with an absorbance up to 2.4 available; stray radiant energy or blocking, which is the most important test in measuring photometrics; and wavelength verification and spectral stability, which ensures measurement consistency. The ST50 is an insertion-style mass flowmeter designed for air, compressed-air or nitrogen flow measurements in line sizes ranging from 2 in. to 24 in. (51 mm to 610 mm). The ST75 is a direct mass flowmeter designed for air- or gas-measurement in smaller line sizes, from 0.25 in. to 2 in. (6 mm to 51 mm).

Measuring 3.15 in. high by 5.51 in. wide by 2.56 in. deep, the DM10 is scalable to ±1,999 digits and features oversized 1-in.-high characters for easy viewing.

FLT flow switch
The FLT (flow/level/temperature) flow switch reliably monitors the flow and temperature of liquids, gases, slurries, lubricants, and other fluids to provide wet/dry detection and pump protection from damage due to sudden, unexpected reductions in flowrates. The FLT flow switch has a dual-alarm capability. Alarm 1 provides a pre-warning signal with the detection of low-flow situations between 0.01 and 3 ft/s, allowing the control system or operator to determine whether to keep the pump running or shut it down. When the feed line to the pump begins to run dry, Alarm 2 activates as an emergency signal to shut down the pump immediately to avoid over-heating and subsequent damage.  The AquaCounter EV-2000L oil evaporator utilizes azeotropic distillation and completely separates water from sample matrices, thus eliminating any side reactions with interfering substances. The unit is especially useful for determining moisture in difficult samples such as heavy oils, grease, peanut butter, etc. The EV-2000L’s heating range is from ambient temperature to 200°C. Carrier gas is N2 gas or dry air and flow is 30–300 mL/min with inlet pressure at 0.8 MPa or less. The dessicant used is a molecular sieve and the unit has an aluminum block heater. The Duosonics is a non-invasive, clamp-on, ultrasonic flowmeter that automatically switches between Pulse Doppler and Transit Time technologies depending on the fluid conditions in the pipe. The unit can measure a variety of fluids from ultrapure water to sludges and slurries. It can even measure entirely different fluids flowing through the same pipe. The Duosonics is particularly well-suited for situations with short pipe runs and undeveloped flow. Triple Plus+ IR monitors
Specially designed for the dangerous and potentially explosive task of emptying hydrocarbon storage tanks, reactors, pipelines or other vessels, the Triple Plus+ IR monitors the purge vent gas to determine when there is less than 100% LEL equivalent flammable gas concentration present. The infrared detector in the unit is a unique dual-range infrared sensor for flammable hydrocarbons scaled with both 0–100% volume and 0–100% LEL ranges, with an automatic range switch between these. This allows the earliest possible termination of nitrogen flow and a switch to air. Purge monitoring is also necessary in the reverse mode. Before hydrocarbon can be re-introduced, a low oxygen level is essential (usually <2% by volume). Nitrogen is therefore once again used to flush out the air, and the oxygen sensor fitted to the Triple Plus+ IR is used to monitor the falling oxygen content of the exhaust line. Once the oxygen content is low enough, the nitrogen flow can be stopped and the hydrocarbon re-introduced. The monitor is then used to follow the refill process to determine when full 100% hydrocarbon concentration is reached, allowing venting to stop.

The X-am 7000 can be fitted with three electrochemical and two infrared optical or catalytic sensors, and can simultaneously measure up to five gases. A choice of over 25 sensors allows the detection of more than 100 gases and vapors. The instrument is dust- and splash-proof, as well as water-resistant with a water-ingress-protection rating of IP67. A high-delivery pump can draw in sample gas through a hose up to 150 ft (45 m) long. When the instrument is in leak-detection mode, it displays a ppm bar graph on the display and emits an ascending or descending tone similar to a Geiger to reflect the detected gas concentration.

Designed for applications requiring the most accurate measurement of large quantities — up to 80,806 lb/min — the PROline Promass F Coriolis mass flowmeter offers accurate and repeatable measurement (±0.1% of range). A software plug-in that enables certain diagnostic tests to be run on its products is now available.  ValveAnalysis works with Emerson Process Management’s AMS Suite to run the Ramp Signature test for the identification of leaks in tubing fittings, improperly  aligned plugs and seats, loose linkage, broken actuator spring sand sticky spool valves. For the HDL test, the plug-in calculates the four standard diagnostic signatures — hysteresis, deadband, repeatability and linearity — by opening and closing valves. ValveAnalysis does not bypass AMS, thereby ensuring that a complete device history is maintained.

L75 series
Electric valve actuators in the L75 series use state-of-the-art technology to provide remote control actuation of quarter-turn valves and other rotary devices, including on/off and modulating rotary valve applications. Featuring either a split-phase capacitor AC-reversing motor or a DC motor, these actuators drive a valve through a sealed, permanently lubricated gear train to offer a lifetime of virtually maintenance-free operation. KSonic Micro
The KSonic Micro is a compact, low-cost, ultrasonic level transmitter/ switch that is designed for liquid and bulk solids level applications. Ultrasonic measurements are based on the time of flight (TOF) of an acoustic wave that is emitted from a transducer and directed toward the product being measured. This wave is reflected back toward the transducer and then converted to an electric signal. Its variable GAP (gain, amplitude and power) technology provides a very narrow beam angle of less than 4 deg., which allows the transmitter to take accurate measurements in narrow vessels, and function in the presence of dust, vapor or foam. It measures liquid levels to 32.8 ft (10 m) and bulk solids to 16 ft (5 m). Its 4–20-mA output is standard for remote indication or remote control, and it has a single-pole/double-throw (SPDT) relay that can be used to activate alarms and pumps. The unit is housed in an IP65 polycarbonate enclosure and the transducer has polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) wetted parts for corrosive environments.

The FV100 Series consist of inline flowmeters that use the vortex-shedding measuring principle. When fluid strikes a bluff body, it imparts alternating vortices downstream of the bluff. This creates a vibration on a sensor body that contains a piezoelectric crystal, whose frequency is proportional to the velocity of the fluid, and is amplified and converted to a 4–20-mA output signal. The FV100 Series has no moving parts and features a bright LED that displays flow in liters or gallons. It can measure flow in either direction and can be used with non-viscous, clean or dirty water-like liquids. The FV100 series is ideal for use in cooling loops that use water or 50% glycols for up to 10% water-soluble machine coolant.

OM-CP-FRTC4000A
The OM-CP-FRTC4000A, a miniature, wireless, battery-powered, standalone thermocouple-based temperature transmitter, sends readings back to its host computer, where the data can be analyzed in real-time. The readings are also logged into the device’s memory for added data security. Data are received at the PC using a receiver that attaches directly to the serial port. Numerous devices may transmit data to the same receiving station. All received data are date- and time-stamped and stored directly to the PC. During operation, the permeation tubes that are installed in each channel emit a small, precisely known flow of each component compound. The computer system controls the proportionate combination of flow from the various channels with a precisely controlled carrier-gas dilution flow to form the mixture for each channel. The Sysmex FPIA-3000 automated particle shape and size analyzer now has the capability to measure particles suspended in nonaqueous solvents, as well as those in water-based materials. This is especially important in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, where there is often a requirement to measure the shape and size of particles that are soluble in water. The Sysmex FPIA-3000 can now accommodate all common solvents, including acetone, methylethylketone, ethyl acetone, xylene and toluene. This instrument can measure particles in the range of 0.8–300 µm and, using a CCD camera, produces images of each particle as well as a scattergram of shape index versus particle size in just 2.5 min. Span Pac H2O-R moisture-standard generators create known calibration standards for trace moisture in reactive gases, including chlorine and HCl. They employ the standard additions technique, in which a small flow of dry inert gas flows over a permeation tube to create a base moisture standard. Measured amounts of the base mixture are then added to a flow of the reactive gas to create the standard. Permeation tubes cover concentrations ranging from <10 ppb to >100 ppm. Multi-point calibrations over a 400:1 range are easily achieved at any concentration level. They can be used in moisture monitor calibration, moisture probe validation, filter capacity testing, and adsorption testing.

Now the technology is making its debut in a dual-gas analyzer. Safety field devices can be operated from the CS3000 R3 terminals. It is also possible to connect the ProSafe-RS system via HART communications with Yokogawa’s Plant Resource Manager software, an asset management system that integrates and manages maintenance information from field instruments.

The MV1000/MV2000 portable paperless recorders have large-capacity memories and offer many more input channels than conventional models (MV100/MV200). The MV1000 features a 24-channel input and the MV2000 has a 48-channel input. The recorders accept many types of inputs, including up to 18 kinds of thermocouples and 12 kinds of resistance temperature detectors (RTDs). Insulation allows the recorders to withstand up to 1,000 V. In only eight minutes, the AC Sulfur SIMDIS analyzer reports the sulfur boiling-point distribution of petroleum products having a final boiling point of 450°C (850 °F) or lower at atmospheric pressure. The device is based on the Agilent Technologies 6890 Series GC with electronic pneumatics control configured with: accelerated SIMDIS ASTM D 2887 application; flame ionization detector (FID); and automatic liquid injector. To determine the sulfur components present in the sample, the analyzer uses a sulfur chemiluminescence detector (SCD), which offers excellent sensitivity. The SCD enables the analyzer to detect sulfur concentrations below 50 ppm in diesel samples and possibly down to 10 ppm depending on the distribution of the sulfur components in the sample.

The HygroTrace meter uses aluminum oxide technology with a newly patented technique to provide accurate and reliable measurement for 0–100 ppb moisture levels with the sensitivity and speed of response matched only by current technology analyzers that are much larger and more expensive. The Total Sulfur (TS) 4000 analyzer incorporates true total sulfur (TTS) technology, which removes nitrogen interference and provides true total sulfur results, down to trace levels. Detectors typically identify nitrogen as nitrogen oxide because it emits at the same wavelength as sulfur dioxide, resulting in inaccurate analysis. It is designed for suspensions or solutions, and is sensitive enough to detect the difference in the viscosity of boiling water (0.294 cP) and ambient water (1.06 cP). The sensor features Type 316 stainless steel wetted parts, and can be equipped with piston rods of 12 different sizes for installation in tanks from 12 in. to 12 ft deep. A suitable replacement for manual viscosity measurement techniques, it can be used with a PLC to provide  automatic sampling and process control.

In-Line Viscosity and Temperature Control System
This in-line viscosity and temperature-control system features an isolated temperature sensor and a proprietary cooling device (patent pending), which eliminates the need to clean the line and apparatus, saving both time and solvent. Insusceptible to component cross-interference, the solid-state TSA-100 sulfur analyzer provides accurate total sulfur measurements, even when H2S, SO2 and mercaptans are present in the sample. It works by having a xenon light source send light through fiber optic cables into a flow cell, where the sample’s unique characteristics dictate its interaction with the light. The light enters a holographic grating, which separates white light into its components, such that a diode array detector can measure the intensity of radiation at each wavelength. As measurements report on the absorption of light by the sample comp- onents, the concentrations of the components are revealed. Because fiber optic cables are used, the analyzer can be installed far from explosive or poisonous gases. The diode array produces full high-resolution spectrum analysis, enabling easy switches between extreme wavelength ranges to provide instantaneous and continuous measurements at 0–10 ppm and 0–100%. The device can measure total sulfur content in two ways. One is the standard method, in which the hydrocarbon sample is placed in a hot combustion tube with an oxygen-rich environment, where the sulfur oxidizes to SO2. The analyzer uses the absorption of the SO2 to determine the concentration of the single component and total sulfur. The other is the direct method, in which the analyzer mathematically derives the concentration of each sulfur compound from the original process stream’s high-resolution absorbance spectra.

The Microspec MCP-100 online real-time water-in-solvents analyzer offers considerable savings over current technologies. It can replace equipment in labs where personnel perform routine liquid-sample applications that require titration to determine the quantity of water in the sample — with the MCP-100, this measurement is performed continuously. Representing state-of-the-art accurate flow measurement in water cycle and process applications, Extended Linearity (EL) 2200 Series electromagnetic flowmeters create unique electromagnetic field profiles to ensure accuracy in turbulent, transitional and laminar flow regimes. Without using linearization software, the meters can provide extended linearity and a measurement range of up to 1000:1. Featuring the ability to measure bi-directional flow, the EL 2200 series has no moving parts and no pressure drop. Based on the Faraday Principle, in which a conductor generates a potential by crossing a magnetic field, the potential is directly proportional to the flow velocity. The meters use a Type 304 stainless-steel flow tube with carbon or stainless flanges. Their sealed electrode and coil assembly provide immunity to humidity variation. A pair of Hastelloy C 22 electrodes generate the magnetic field, while a third functions as a ground. For one- to six-in. meter sizes, the meter uses PTFE as standard liner material. Larger sizes use Ebonite. Flange and sensor exterior surfaces are coated with acrylic paint, providing excellent resistance to water.

Extended linearity 500 electromagnetic flowmeters
Extended linearity (EL) 500 electromagnetic flowmeters create a unique electromagnetic field profile to ensure accuracy in turbulent, laminar and transitional flows. They operate based on the Faraday principle, by which a conductor crossing a mag-netic field generates a potential, which is directly proportional to the flow velocity. Available in line sizes from 1/8 in. to 3/4 in., these compact meters have a wide measurement range of up to 1000:1 without the aid of linearization software. The EL 500 has a bidirectional flow capability with no moving parts and no pressure drop. The meters cover the temperature range of –4_F to 320_F. They utilize a 316 stainless steel flow tube with AISI 316 UNI 338 male-threaded, NPT or ISO 2852 fittings. Optional connections can be made of Hastelloy C or titanium. Available in various sizes and with up to eight channels in a single NEMA 4X enclosure, the Series 684 indicator alarm module is an economical solution to the issue of machine shutdown protection, as increased vibration levels portend potential failure. Designed to simultaneously control both heating and cooling processes, the SOLO is a single-loop dual-output temperature controller featuring four types of control modes: proportional-integral-derivative (PID), On/Off, Ramp/Soak and Manual. The monitor enables operators to use balancing/combustion tuning to identify gas stratification problem areas. The Series 70CV3000 Chloromatic 3000 gas-flow control valve is a wall-mounted system designed for automatic control of chemical feed in water or wastewater applications. The integrated, microprocessor-based controller has a control valve that responds to multiple process signals from a water flow transmitter or chlorine residual analyzer. The Chloromatic 3000 eliminates the need for continuous operator monitoring and manual adjustment of the gas feed rate resulting from changes in flow and/or residual levels. Automating the chemical feed process typically leads to a reduction in gas consumption for water and wastewater utilities, since manual feed rates are based on peak process conditions. The Chloromatic 3000 is field-configurable for flow proportioning, residual, compound-loop or feed-forward control. The SC400 handheld calorimeters are rugged, waterproof, single-parameter instruments designed for use in laboratory and field testing. Four types are available: chlorine ( free and total); chlorine dioxide; ammonia; and fluoride. The instruments feature easy four-button operation; a large back-lit, highly visible, indigo blue display; a real-time clock; and 16-set data logging capability. When installed within a water filtration system, the Model 5000 Wet/Wet Differential Pressure Sensor is designed to detect the difference between the upstream pressure driving water through the filter and the downstream pressure. After reading a significant drop in pressure, the sensor can notify the system that the filter is clogged or needs replacing. In addition to featuring highly accurate differential pressure output, the Model 5000 is constructed of type 316L stainless steel wetted materials that resist hydrogen embrittlement to ensure the highest reliability in a variety of media. This design provides excellent overrange and burst protection (five times the rated line pressure or 2,000 psi, whichever is less) for system safety in the most extreme conditions. The Model 5000 does not contain internal O-rings or fluid-filled cavities, eliminating the chance of outside media permeation or system contamination from silicone oil. AST4900 pressure sensor
The AST4900 is a competitively priced, high-quality pressure sensor suitable for measuring gases and liquids in high-purity applications. These stainless steel sensors are free of oil-fill, welds and internal O-rings, which eliminates the risk of system contamination in extreme conditions. The sensors are available with two standard fittings: 0.25-in. NPT male and 0.25-in. VCR male. Each sensing element is machined from 316L stainless steel and is electropolished to remove contaminants. The one-piece design can also be manufactured using Inconel 718, a nickel alloy with a wide range of chemical compatibility. The AST4900 can be scaled for pressure ranges of 0–25 psi to 0–10,000 psi. The AST4520 is a media-isolated, submersible pressure sensor with an all-stainless-steel construction that is approved to Underwriters Laboratories / Canadian Underwriters Laboratory (UL/cUL) 913 Class 1, Division 1 IS, Groups C and D, when used with an approved barrier. It is a cost-effective solution for monitoring the level of viscous media in turbulent tanks. Its flush-diaphram steel-cage design allows for proper media flow while keeping the sensor at the bottom of the tank or well. The Dynacalibrator Model 150 is a constant-temperature system designed to generate precise ppm or ppb concentrations of chemical compounds in a gas stream, using permeation devices as the trace gas source. It is used as a reference for the calibration of gas chromatography instruments and in other instruments that measure gas concentrations. This lightweight, compact unit is capable of delivering the precise concentrations required. A passivated inertium-coated stainless steel permeation chamber houses the permeation device(s), with measured inert carrier gas sweeping the calibration gas/vapor from the chamber. The digital temperature controller maintains the chamber temperature at a setpoint with an accuracy of ±0.01°C, traceable to NIST standards. The wide range of temperature settings (5°C above ambient to 110°C) means the end user can generate a wide range of volumetric concentrations for both low- and high-vapor-pressure chemical compounds, establishing or changing the desired volumetric concentration by varying the carrier flow. The 3100 Series Pressure Transducers deliver accuracy and long-term stability, with a full-scale accuracy of 0.25% and long-term drift of just 0.1%/yr over the full scale. This combination of performance and stability is achieved using sputtered thin-film sensing technology, yet is available at prices more common to lower-quality capacitance sensors. At less than 1-in. in diameter and just 32 g, these compact transducers are suitable for installation where space is at a premium. Built from stainless steel, they are well-suited to harsh environments. They have a pressure sensing range of 0 to 30,000 psi (2,200 bar), and will withstand 40-G peak-to-peak sinusoidal vibration. The UCL-520 Series ultrasonic level sensor is a two-wire transmitter that is built with a rugged polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) transducer so it can handle ultra-pure, corrosive and waste liquids. Its 3-in. minimum beam width permits easy installation in applications with limited space, and its minimum 8-in. deadband allows the maximum amount of media to fill the tank. The sensor is push-button-calibrated with a 6-segment liquid crystal display (LCD). It is suitable for non-contact applications, such as industrial water treatment, waste-water management, and chemical storage, as well as many other challenging fluids.

Oxystreamer O2 and CO2 gas controller
The Oxystreamer O2 and CO2 gas controller has a closed-loop dynamic gas control system and maintains mixed gas concentration to within 0.2% of selected setpoint levels. Ranges covered include O2 concentrations from 0.1% to 99.9%, CO2 concentrations from 0.1% to 20.0% and N2 concentrations from 0% to 100%. The two output streams of this system are suitable for controlling dissolved O2 and CO2 levels in a media or perfusate. The Oxystreamer eliminates the inflexibility and high cost of premixed gas, and inaccuracies due to gas stratification in premixed cylinders.

CV-30 live-cell imaging chamber
The CV-30 live-cell imaging chamber is compatible with any microscope stage capable of accepting a multi-well plate. It features a user-defined bath geometry, bath volume, and a large viewing area. A 0.17-mm-thick glass coverslip forms the top of the chamber and a 1.0-mm-thick round coverslip forms the chamber bottom. The CV-30 is compatible with CytoViva’s high-resolution imaging system, so it can be used for simultaneous observation of fluorescent and non-fluorescent samples.

The LM 40 is a mobile laboratory-scale blender that has an NIR spectrometer integrated into the lid of the blending bin, specially adapted 21 CFR Part 11-compliant software. MINIDIS portable analyzer
The MINIDIS portable analyzer uses the new ASTM D7344-07 method to determine the distillation characteristics of a wide range of petroleum products, including: low-sulfur diesel fuels; petroleum spirits; naphthas; and kerosenes. Specifically developed for a small sample volume, its miniaturized apparatus makes field testing possible — the compact instrument can be installed in a mobile lab, or a fleet of tank trucks can be equipped with the device. The ASTM D7344 method requires a sample volume of just 6 mL, which is about one-fifteenth that required by the ASTM D86 method, and it takes just half the time (10 min vs. 20 min for ASTM D86). The MINIDIS uses small sealed cups and a metallic distillation column. Rinsing, filling, sample lifting and sample introduction are fully auto-matic. Unlike instruments that use the ASTM-D-86 Method, the MINDIS does not require a fire detection system.

This display meter works with the Level Plus MG transmitter via a Modbus interface to monitor the product, interface and temperature all from a single process opening. With a direct connection, the Modbus protocol provides volume measurement with a strapping table (up to 100 points) and temperature correction according to API standards. Developed as a side-tank indicator (STI) for storage tanks, it can display tank levels in feet and inches, to sixteenths of an inch. The transmitter features plug-and-play installation, and users can choose to have the meter display product only, product and temperature, or product, interface and temperature. The Modbus STI includes two relays (2 A at 250 SPDT), a 4–20-mA output, 120/240-VAC input power, 24-VDC to the gage, and an optional explosionproof housing. Suitable for process control, bulk storage, precision inventory control and product level, interface level and temperature monitoring, the transmitter features surface-mount technology and a high-speed signal-processing integrated circuit. The microprocessor firmware has a flexible command interface, high noise-rejection capability, built-in test functions, and automatic data-error checking. The Model 231 Multi-Sense differential-pressure transducer is suitable for monitoring control pump differential pressures, chiller or boiler differential pressure drops, and flow of gases or liquids. The transducer reduces inventory and installation costs by providing the user with field-selectable features such as switch-selectable pressure ranges, selectable analog outputs, and uni-directional and bi-directional spans. The Asset Command Unit (ACU) is a wireless tracking device that uses a global positioning system (GPS) to monitor and report on a railcar’s location and other metrics, including shock and vibration, temperature of contents, open/closed hatch status, and loaded/empty status. This rugged telemetry device is mounted on the railcar or locomotive and features a microprocessor, a GPS receiver, and a digital cellular modem. The power for the unit is provided by a lithium-ion battery, maintained by an integrated solar panel. The ACU provides the location, direction of travel, and speed of the locomotive or railcar. The new high-contrast graphic display shows absorbance, transmittance and concentration in real-time and in any unit of measure, such as CU, ppm, EBC, FTU, and g/L. The Exoscan is a portable, compact Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer that weighs less than 7 lb and is controlled by a PDA. The spectrometer is designed for nondestructive onsite surface and bulk analysis applications, including sampling solids, pastes, gels and liquids. The intelligent interface unit (IIU) integrates corrosion-monitoring transmitters with either a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system or distributed control system (DCS) through Modbus or object linking and embedding for process control (OLE for Process Control. or OPC). The Sta-Kool Type 316L stainless steel cooling element protects pressure gages from large variations in temperature and pulsation. Its maximum operating temperature is 750ºF (400ºC) and maximum operating pressure is 5,000 psi at 100ºF. In tests, it has been able to reduce 400ºF (204ºC) liquid process temperatures to 100ºF (38ºC) at the active portion of a Bourdon tube. The Sta-Kool can be either threaded or welded (the latter would eliminate a potential leak path) to any pressure gage with a 0.5-in NPT male connection made of a compatible material. It can be attached between a pressure gage and diaphragm seal to achieve maximum process measurement protection, guarding against pulsation and temperature extremes.

SenseLine ELDS (enhanced laser diode spectroscopy) series open-path gas detectors feature the manufacturer’s patented Simu-Gas technology, which eliminates in-field gas testing and allows users to perform remote, on-command, functional testing of the detectors from a programmable logic controller (PLC) at a control center or from a PDA. Simu-Gas controls both the synthesis of laser diode drive waveforms in a transmitter and the recognition of “harmonic fingerprints” by a receiver. Unique harmonic fingerprints are produced when a target gas in the monitored path absorbs the transmitter’s laser diode radiation. When the receiver recognizes the fingerprint, it calculates and then displays the quantity of the target gas. The accuracy of the gas detector is confirmed by comparing the gas reading on the receiver to the quantity of target gas simulated by the transmitter. Testing can be performed at any desired frequency with automatic data logging, and without having to physically access individual gas detectors or handle hazardous gas cylinders.

These double-ferrule instrumentation-grade tube fittings provide leakproof and torque-free seals at tubing connections. This reduces the likelihood of hazardous and expensive leaks in instrumentation, process, pneumatic, hydraulic, gas and other tubing systems. The solid leak-free joint is formed as a five-piece connection comprised of the nut, the back ferrule, the front ferrule, the body and the tubing. The ferrules are tightly swaged around the tube, and the lack of initial strain on the tubing ensures against tubing wall damage. Axial movement along the tube prevents the transmission of torque from the fitting to the tubing. The fittings are resistant to temperature change and do not significantly reduce flow area. They can be remade several times and withstand heavy impulse and vibration in both vacuum and pressure systems. No special tools are needed for installation, which requires only 1.25 turns until the fitting is tight.

The MP300 switch series has an attached floating actuator that provides simple, cost-effective liquid detection in industrial refrigeration and other process-control applications. FS00Z float level switches have a polypropylene housing with an integrated, water-tight and position-dependent electromechanical switch. The vertical position of the hollow float changes with the level of the liquid media, and when it reaches an angle of 45 deg. from horizontal, switching occurs. The technology is based on the principle that unwanted dust and fines will typically adhere to larger pellets and will be removed by rinsing the test sample with a liquid (preferably demineralized water). This process washes away dust and fines into a beaker. Particles are then poured into the filter collection unit, which separates the fines from the water. The parts-per-million concentration is determined by comparing the weight of the filter paper before and after the process. The wet analysis quantifies the amounts of dust having particle sizes from 1.6 to 500 µm.

Sparger System
This sparger system reduces the time and effort needed to replace porous metal sparger elements in bioreactor and fermenter tanks. Its design allows a new tip to be installed at the end of the assembly after each batch is complete. Once installed, the sparger tip is ready for steam-in-place operation. It is removable for cleaning by a variety of methods, including ultrasonic cleaning or detergent and water flush. Changing to clean sparger tips after each batch provides an excellent method of maintaining GMP process validation while reducing the time and cost between batches.
